Let There Be Water

The United States government predicts that 40 of our 50 states-and 60% of the earth's land surface-will soon face alarming gaps between available water and the growing demand for it. Without action, food prices will rise, economic growth will slow, and political instability is likely to follow.Seth M. Siegel is a serial entrepreneur, water activist and a New York Times bestselling author. His critically acclaimed, award-winning book Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution for a Water-Starved World has been published in 18 languages and is on sale in more than 50 countries. His newest work, Troubled Water: What's Wrong with What We Drink, sets forth an ambitious agenda for a fundamental rethinking of America’s drinking water system. Oded Distel, one of Israel’s leading water experts, became CEO of Tal-Ya in July 2019 following a substantial career of 24 years in leading positions in the government sector, became the CEO of Tal-Ya in July 2019. In 2007 he founded and became the director of Israel NewTech, a pioneering national program led by the Ministry of Economy and Industry whose goal is to find smart solutions to global challenges by promoting academic research, local market implementation, and international exposure of Israeli companies. In the first 5 years, the program helped take Israel water technology from $600 million to $2 billion. *Let There Be Water illustrates how Israel can serve as a model for the United States and countries everywhere by showing how to blunt the worst of the coming water calamities. Even with 60% of its country made of desert, Israel has not only solved its water problem; it also now has an abundance of water. Israel even supplies water to its neighbors-the Palestinians and the Kingdom of Jordan-every day. *Troubled Water is full of shocking stories about contaminated water found throughout the country and about the everyday heroes who have successfully forced changes in the quality and safety of our drinking water. And it concludes with what America must do to reverse decades of neglect and play-it-safe inaction by government at all levels in order to keep our most precious resource safe. The Lusia Milch Story: A Gift of History

The legacy, and lessons, of a generation of eyewitnesses to the mass destruction of European Jewish life, have been enriched in the past few years with the documentation of stories and accounts, now preserved for future generations. A newly commissioned memoir film, sharing the life and losses of Lusia Milch, contributes to this tapestry of layered history. Motivated by a son’s birthday present for his mother’s 90th birthday, A Survivor’s Journey, The Lusia Milch Story is not only a gift that honored his mother but contributes to a broader imperative of the moment to be alert to signs of intolerance. The heroine of this documentary film, Lusia Milch, and her son David, are joined on this panel by the film’s director, Julia Mintz, as well as the Director of the Yad Vashem Visual Center, Liat Benhabib, to provide insights and context on the importance on preserving first person history. NCSL WLN – The Climb: Women and the Legislative Ladder

The United States and Israel have a common opportunity and challenge to advance women into legislative leadership positions today. The U.S. has fallen behind most established democracies with respect to women’s representation in politics. Women remain underrepresented at the federal, state, and local levels. The current uptick in women running for office, while encouraging, is unlikely to close this gender gap. There are currently 2,162 women who serve in the 50 state legislatures making up 29.3% of all state legislators nationwide.Despite Israel's excellent educational opportunities for women, strong legislation and history of women politicians, like their American counterparts Israeli women are also underrepresented in this arena as well. Of course, women’s opportunities and experiences in politics are influenced by factors other than gender. Join us for a discussion with AIFL's partner organization, the National Conference of State Legislatures, with representatives from its Women's Legislative Network, in conversation with two former Members of the Knesset. 2021-04-07 Yom HaShoah Film Screening and Panel Discussion

Join us as we commemorate Yom HaShoah with our esteemed panel led by Executive Producer, Nancy Spielberg and Director, Roberta Grossman of the film “Who Will Write our History?” The film tells the story of historian Emanuel Ringelblum who led the Warsaw Ghetto resistance and brings to life the adage ‘the pen is mightier than the sword.’ After hundreds of thousands of Jews were imprisoned by German forces in the Warsaw Ghetto a group of writers and scholars code-named the Oyneg Shabbes (The Joys of Shabbat) began to document their culture, daily lives and the atrocities perpetrated against them. Ringelblum and his cohorts sealed and buried thousands of pages of their stories beneath the buildings of the ghetto before it was burnt, and everyone murdered. However, in a bittersweet ‘victory’ their story lives on.The panel will share video highlights from the film and discuss: What inspired them to create such a poignant cinematic and comprehensive picture of this period. What they hoped to achieve by incorporating the reading of excerpts of the actual letters and diaries recovered from the ghetto.Their hope for the legacy of this film, as an educational tool capturing both tremendous grief and extraordinary determination. Experimental Biology of Aging: Zuckerman Institute Science Series

As we grow older, we are more likely to be diagnosed with one or more chronic ailments. These ailments rob us of our quality of life. Science seeks to understand the genetic, molecular, and cellular mechanisms that make aging a major risk factor and driver of common chronic conditions and diseases of older people. The goal of science remains focused on discovering the basic biology at the intersection of aging, chronic disease, frailty, and resilience. By studying what happens during the aging process of different species, investigators hope to discover similarities and differences between these conditions as they relate to aging. Join our scientific panel, a Zuckerman Faculty Scholar from Israel and his U.S. based colleague and fellow researcher as part of our new series in cooperation with the Zuckerman Institute which explores the impact of science and technology on our everyday lives. 2021 Youth Ambassador Student Exchange (YASE)

2021 Youth Ambassador Student Exchange (YASE) Background: The Youth Ambassador Student Exchange (YASE) program is the AIFL’s flagship educational program and since 1977 the AIFL has conducted this formal binational educational exchange in partnership with the Israel Youth Exchange Authority (IYEA) formerly the Public Council for the Exchange of Youth and Young Adults. To date over 5000 predominantly non-Jewish American high school students and their families have participation in this month-long exchange program where chaperoned they gain the experience of living in each other’s country and home. Each program is conducted around a current international theme. Program Dates: October 14th – November 11th Israeli Delegations arrive in the US - October 14th US Home Hospitality – October 14th to 21st Tours/Lectures etc. Washington DC & NYC – October 21st – 27th October 21st – 24th – Washington, DC October 24th – 27th – New York American Delegations Arrive in Israel - October 28th Tours/Lecture etc. Jerusalem a& Tel Aviv – October 28th – November 4th October 28th – November 1st – Jerusalem November 1st – 3rd – Tel Aviv Home Hospitality – November 4th to 10th American Delegations Return to the US – November 11th Guidelines: Delegation Size: 10 students preferably from the 11th grade though students from the 10th grade are accepted (5 boys and 5 girls) and a chaperone, unless your district guidelines require more than one chaperone. Orientation programs: Orientation workshops and seminars can be facilitated by AIFL partners in education, professional staff and lay leadership in cooperation with the Israeli Consulate with oversight for your region. Each delegation must complete at least 3 orientation sessions with a focus on Israeli culture, history, popular facts and current affairs. Diversity and Inclusion: The youth ambassador delegations both American and Israeli should reflect the diversity of both countries. Cost: The cost per participant is $3,400. This includes all study materials, accommodations in the US and Israel, meals, entrance fees, ground transportation, domestic and international airfare, videography, international travel, and medical insurance. The school district is responsible for the cost of the chaperone/s (some districts may require more than one chaperone for study abroad programs), which should not be passed on to the students. The AIFL extends payment plans in lieu of lump sum payments if needed. Please contact me, to discuss this option if needed. However, the initial down payment must be made with the submission of the completed student application forms (not less than $500 pp). The balance divided into a number of payments at the discretion of the program coordinator or chaperone and completed prior to the start of the program on Thursday, October 14th. Hosting: Home hospitality is gender based, unless there are extenuating circumstances which must be signed off on by the parents/guardians of both the host and guest student and the AIFL. Hosting program: To ensure that your hosting program is successful your school community and your colleagues should be aware of your guests. Especially, since they will be seeing your Israeli guests on campus and perhaps even sitting in class with their ‘host sibling’. Perhaps a first activity could be a welcome assembly or pep rally where your Israeli guests make their first group presentation as to who they are, life in Israel and their city etc. Your hosting program for your guests should include activities that are unique to your state, school district, special events at school etc. During the weekend and on evening’s your guests are with their hosts and will participate in their family activity unless there is a group activity planned for both American and Israeli youth ambassadors. Please note, the program does not require the host youth ambassador delegation to participate in all activities for your guest Israeli youth ambassadors during school hours. You can identify those activities that you think will be more meaningful if they did. This will prevent them from missing any classes unnecessarily until both delegations (your delegation and your guests) leave for Washington DC on Thursday, October 21st. Team calls: As we prepare to start this year’s exchange during the month of August until October 14th, there will be bi-weekly calls with our American YASE Chaperone/Coordinators team. Team calls are mandatory team calls hosted by the AIFL which will walk each of the American delegations through the process until the start of the program. We share ideas, answer any questions, or address concerns and discuss hosting programs and to help each school district create successful programs for their guests. These calls really will allow us to discuss our preparations, review this year’s program, both in the US and Israel including group activities, presentations, and projects, discuss chaperone duties, answer any questions that arise as we progress to the start of the program. Program Theme and Group Project/ Assignments: This year’s program will be interactive and include group discussions and activities, guest presenters and site visits.
